# The one good coat

There is a morning, usually somewhere near the end of August, when you step outside and feel it for the first time. Not cold, exactly. Just the smallest cool edge to the air that was not there last week. Autumn, sending word ahead.

  
It is the loveliest moment to think about a coat, because you are not desperate yet. You have time to choose one good thing rather than grabbing whatever is nearest in October when it is properly raining.

  
And if you buy one coat, let it be a trench. 

A proper caramel one, the sort of shape that has looked right for about a hundred years and will look right for a hundred more. It goes over everything: the school run in jeans, a dress for something that matters, a jumper and boots when the leaves are down. It is the coat you reach for without thinking, which is exactly what you want a coat to be.

  
The one I keep coming back to is simply called The Trench, from M&S, in Light Caramel. It is cotton twill with a shower-resistant finish, so it earns its place on a drizzly day, double-breasted with a belt you can tie or leave loose, and a soft checked lining that is a quiet pleasure every time you catch it. Nothing about it is trying too hard, which is the whole point. It is £95, which for a coat you will wear for years is really not very much at all.

  
One small, friendly tip: it comes up generous, so you will probably want to go a size down from your usual. Enough room for a jumper underneath, not so much that you feel lost in it.

  
You do not need a rail of coats for the season ahead. You need one that feels like you, that keeps the rain off, and that you are a little glad to put on. Buy it now, while you are calm about it.
