A chair for the long evenings
Late August does this lovely thing with the light. By eight o’clock it comes in low and gold and sideways, catches the dust, and turns an ordinary corner into somewhere you want to sit. It does not last. In a few weeks the evenings will draw in, and we will not see it again until spring.
So here is the small, useful thing worth doing this week: make one corner ready to catch it.
You do not need to buy anything. Pull a chair to wherever the evening light lands. Add a small table or a stool for a cup to rest on. A lamp for when the light finally goes, so you do not have to get up. A folded throw over the arm, because the evenings are just starting to cool. That is the whole project.
Nothing here needs to match. A characterful old chair, a rug that has seen things, one good thing beside a plain thing, gathered over time rather than bought in a set. That is what makes a corner feel like yours rather than a showroom.
The rest of the house can be exactly as August has left it: a bit sandy, a bit undone, a swimming towel over the bannister. You are not tidying the house. You are keeping one chair, for one hour, for the last of the good light.
Sit in it this evening. Enjoy this season.
